What’s in it for us? Creating financial and academic incentives for faculty in an online degree program

There is increased interest in distance education at many institutions of higher learning, in order to reach potential students who find it difficult to come to a main campus for the period needed to obtain a higher degree. The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Virginia Tech has an online masters degree program, providing a Masters in Agricultural and Life Sciences. Courses have been taught in this program since 2007. Faculty are very diverse in their initial interest in virtual teaching and in taking up responsibilities in addition to existing duties. In order to recruit faculty for online course development and in advising of virtual graduate students, the must be transparent discussion on work load involved and the benefits that can accrue with involvement in the program. This presentation will discuss incentives for faculty involvement, including student advising and financial support for teaching efforts.
