Phytopathology News Editor-in-Chief Bob Kemerait follows the story of how the discovery of a new disease (tar spot) on field corn in Georgia by one man on one afternoon on one plant has captured the attention of professionals across state lines from different institutions and disciplines. This network of experts is working together to use new and existing systems to manage tar spot in Georgia.​

​Pierce's disease, initially known as California vine disease, was first reported in vineyards from the Santa Ana River Valley near Anaheim, CA, in 1892. Named after Newton B. Pierce, the first professionally trained plant pathologist in California, this column explores the story of this important disease of grape vines and its role in the discovery of a new pathogen group, fastidious xylem-limited bacteria (XLB).
