CSI Dublin: Tracking a potato killer

<div><span size="3"><span face="Calibri" style="font-family:Calibri;">Jean Ristaino is a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor of Plant Pathology at NC State. Her lab works on emerging plant diseases that threaten global food security including </span><em><span style="font-family:'Calibri';">Phytophthora infestans</span></em><span face="Calibri" style="font-family:Calibri;"> cause of the Irish potato famine in the 1840s. Her team studies the epidemiology, population genetics and migrations of both historic and present day strains of the pathogen and was the first to use historic herbarium samples to genotype the famine lineage. Her lab manages USAblight.org a disease surveillance system for late blight.</span></span></div>
