Colletotrichum Management: A Complex Challenge

Webinar Summary

Colletotrichum spp. has been listed as one of the top ten plant pathogenic organisms.  This fungal genus has become a hot topic for research due to its status as a globally destructive pathogen on many essential host crops.  Despite its importance, many aspects of the genus remain mysterious because of its complex taxonomy.  This webinar, based on a recent Plant Disease Feature Review article, will provide insights into the importance of the pathogen and its complexity.  It will also explore current research and future directions for research with an emphasis on Colletotrichum management on temperate fruit crops.​​​​​​​

For researchers new to Colletotrichum, this webinar will provide insights into the importance of the pathogen and the challenges associated with researching it as well as a summary of current research and future directions. Seasoned Co​lletotrichum researchers will explore the recent research on Colletotrichum spp. infecting temperate fruit crops and gain insights into currently available and potential future management practices.

Madeline Dowling
Clemson University

​​Madeline Dowling is a postdoctoral scientist in the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences at

Clemson University.  She is also a freelance artist who combines her love for art and plant pathology to create scientific illustrations, photographs, and animatio​ns explaining complex scientific concepts to a general audience. She has received grants, fellowships, and awards for this work, including a USDA NIFA postdoctoral grant, a grant from the Southern IPM Center, and the R.J. Tarleton Fellowship from APS.  She was also named one of the Schroth “Faces of the Future” by APS in 2019.  She aspires to be like one of her favorite plant pathologists, George Washington Carver, with whom she shares faith in God, love for art, and passion for the extension. Like Carver, she hopes to encourage growers to further utilize scientific concepts in the field, resulting in the application of more effective management practices in the future.​
