​Southern Division Meeting

The 99th SD-APS Annual Meeting was a hybrid in-person/virtual meeting on March 7 - 10, 2022 in Chattanooga, TN.


COVID-19 Safety Guidelines

  • Vaccination strongly recommended;
  • Wearing a face mask over your nose and mouth is strongly recommended during the event, except when actively eating, drinking and presenting a talk;
  • Engaging in social distancing at all times during the event, not atten​ding a function if ill, and washing hands before participating in any planned function are strongly recommended;
  • Check safety rules issued by the City of Chattanooga and/or State of Tennessee (https://connect.chattanooga.gov/covid/) before the event or at the Read House Hotel (https://www.thereadhousehotel.com/covid-guidelines/);
  • Feel free to switch registration from in-person to virtual if ill and please inform Rebecca Melanson (rebecca.melanson@msstate.edu) regarding this change request before the event.

  • Advance/Early Registration Deadline – Register early and save some money! Regular registration begins January 19, 2022.

  • Presenter Registration Deadline – Presenters of submitted abstracts must register by this date to prevent abstracts being pulled from the program. (Regular registration begins January 19, 2022.)

  • Nomination Submission Deadline: Graduate Student Representative – Submit nominations to Rebecca Melanson (rebecca.melanson@msstate.edu). Please include “SD-APS Graduate Student Representative Nomination” in the subject line.


Monday, February 7, 2022

  • Hotel Reservations Deadline – This is the last day to make a reservation at the group rate. Visit the hotel tab for more information.

  • Scientific Program and Student Competition Notification Deadlines – Participants in the scientific program, Graduate Student Research Award Competition, and Graduate Student Poster Competition will be notified as to abstract acceptance as an oral or poster presentation and/or participation in the Graduate Student Research Award Competition or Graduate Student Poster Competition.
     
  • Award Notifications Deadline – Scholarship applicants will be notified of the decisions of their application.

  • Registration Deadline – Deadline to register for Graduate Student/Post-Doc Social/Business Meeting, the Careers 101 Workshop, and the Nursery and A Little Taste of Tennessee Tour. (Late registration begins February 22, 2022.)

Meeting Highlights 

Poster Technical Session/Graduate Student Poster Competition

Monday, February 28, 2022 – Friday, March 4, 2022; Cost: FREE (registration required, virtual only)

Posters will be entirely virtual in 2022! Posters will be available for viewing beginning on February 28, 2022, and throughout the meeting. Posters will be judged the week before the meeting. Welcome Reception

Monday, March 7, 2022; 6:00 PM EST – 8:00 PM EST; Cost: FREE (registration required, in-person only)

Gather and visit with your fellow SD-APS Meeting attendees at The Read House before the scientific program begins. Appetizers will be available, and a cash bar is anticipated. Please indicate if you plan to attend so that we can get an accurate count for food purchases.
 

Graduate Student Research Competition

Careers 101 Workshop: Interviews

Tuesday, March 8, 2022; 12:00 PM EST – 2:00 PM EST; Cost: FREE (registration required, in-person only)

Interviews are a critical step in the hiring process, but there are tips and tricks to assure a successful interview. This workshop will provide students and early career professionals with an overview of the process and guidelines for preparing for job interviews in academia, government, and industry. The workshop includes an interactive mock interview session using common interview questions. Lunch will be provided. Workshop is intended for early career professionals, postdocs, and students. You must register by February 21, 2022, to reserve a spot for this event.

Graduate Student Business Meeting/Social​

Get to know your fellow graduate students and post-docs and discuss the role and future goals of graduate students and postdocs within the Division. Social/meeting will take place at The Read House. ​

Symposium: Ornamental Production Challenges and Perspectives: A Case Study of Boxwood Blight​

Researchers and Extension specialists with the Boxwood Blight Insight Group (BBIG) share their mission providing everyone in the horticultural chain—from farmers to consumers and all citizens cherishing gardens and gardening—with the knowledge and tools needed to win the battle against boxwood blight through innovation, economic analysis, and education.

Join an APS Council representative and the SD-APS Executive Committee for an APS update and to discuss the current SD-APS business over lunch (provided for in-person attendees).


Oral Technical Session

Awards Banquet

Join your SD-APS colleagues for a final night of networking and to recognize your 2022 SD-APS award winners.​ Additional tickets to the awards banquet are available for purchase ($35) if you plan to bring a guest
 

Field Tour - Nursery and a Little Taste of Tennessee​ Tour

Thursday, March 10, 2022; 8:00 AM EST – 7:00 PM EST; Cost: $35 (registration required)
 
Participants will visit research laboratories and the USDA ARS U.S. National Arboretum laboratories at the Tennessee State University Otis L. Floyd Nursery Research Center in McMinnville to learn about ongoing research on woody ornamental crops. Lunch will be provided at the Tennessee State University Nursery Research Center. After lunch, participants will visit the Jack Daniel’s Distillery in Lynchburg for a distillery tour and whiskey sampling. Transportation by shuttle will be provided. The shuttle will depart from The Read House at 8:00 AM EST and will return to The Read House no later than 7:00 PM EST. Tour participants will travel to all tour stops; alternate arrangements to join or exist the tour late or early will not be made. Participants must be over 21.

You must register by February 21, 2022, to reserve a spot for this event. 

There is a limit of 20 spots for this event. Note: If at least 10 people are not registered for this event by January 9, 2022 (advanced registration deadline), the tour will be canceled.
