Culture Collections

Culture collections of plant-associated microbes provide a needed resource of genotypic and phenotypic variation necessary for effective research in plant pathology. Collections provide a genetic link between the past and present and can provide insight on changes that have occurred since previous epidemics. In response to this critical need PPB has initiated the following efforts during the past few years:

2013
NSF RCN developed and in progress as the U.S. Culture Collection Network (USCCN). Updates were provided to USDA, and continued funding support encouraged for a National Plant Microbial Germplasm System (NPMGS).

2012
Continued progress being made with USDA for funding support of a National Plant Microbial Germplasm System (NPMGS).

2011
USDA-ARS continues to support the new National Plant Microbial Germplasm System both with financial input and physical infrastructure; the steps taken are only the beginning and input of resources is needed to build the program further. PPB was pleased to learn more about the ARS request for significant new resources for microbial collections that was included in the Administration’s FY2012 budget request. Discussions with NSF program officers provided helpful insights that will guide the submission of a Research Coordination Network proposal to link scientists nationally and internationally to facilitate this process.

2010

2009
Formulated an initial draft proposal for distribution to various stakeholders based on the two workshop outcomes. The effort is now referenced as the National Plant Microbial Germplasm System (NPMGS).
