Spherical viruslike particles (VLPs) which measured 41 nm in diam, were found in all Ustilago maydis strains which carry a cytoplasmically inherited factor for resistance to a killer toxin. Heterokaryon transfer of the VLPs accompanied the transmission of this cytoplasmic factor.
