Purified lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Xanlhomonas campestris pv. campestris induced accumulation of transcript for (-l,3-glucanase in turnip at concentrations of 1 µg/ml. The lipid A-inner core structure was required for activity but the O-an(igen had no role. We suggest that release of LPS in planta triggers expression of at least some defense-related genes.
