A single a elicitin, phytotoxin secreted by Phytophthora infestans, responsible for systemic HR-Iike necroses in tobacco, was purified from the culture filtrate. Its sequence was compared to other a elicitins in correlation with toxicity. In the filtrate, we also found ubiquitin, whose biological function remains unclear.

Additional Keywords: protein elicitor; Nicotianae tabacum; toxin.
