Abiotic Generation of a Volatile Fungistatic Factor in Soil by Liming. T. S. Hora, Post Doctoral Fellow, Department of Botany and Plant Pathology, Colorado State University, Fort Collins 80521; Ralph Baker, Professor, Department of Botany and Plant Pathology, Colorado State University, Fort Collins 80521. Phytopathology 64:624-629. Accepted for publication 5 November 1973. DOI: 10.1094/Phyto-64-624.

Application of lime as 1:1 Ca(OH)2 : CaCO3 to raw soil, and to soil either before or after autoclaving, resulted in the production of fungistatic volatile(s). The volatile factor(s) could be induced in a slightly acid aqueous soil extract made alkaline by lime or tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane (tris) solution in the absence of any culturable organisms.

Additional keywords: liming, volatile inhibitor.
