Phytophthora capsici infects a wide range of plants involving more than 50 species, including cucurbitaceous and solanaceous crops. The pathogen infects roots, stems, leaves, and fruit. Water-soaked areas appear followed by a white fungal growth on the surface. Fruit that become infected are often touching the soil. Under the hot, wet conditions of South Florida, P. capsici can cause up to 100% yield loss.
