The prominent, acorn-shaped aecia of Gymnosporangium sabinae on the underside of a Callery pear leaf form in late summer on brown, blisterlike swellings. This disease is new to the northeastern United States. It was confirmed in New York in 2011 and diagnosed on landscape trees in southwestern Connecticut in 2012. The life cycle is typical of Gymnosporangium rusts, and the pathogen can be damaging to both ornamental and orchard pear.
