Host: Theobroma cacao L. (cocoa)Disease name: Anthracnose (Colletotrichum pod rot)Pathogen name: Glomerella cingulata (Stoneman) Spauld. & H. Shrenk (teleomorph); Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Penz.) Penz. & Sacc. (anamorph)
Infection initiates on the surfaces of the pods as small, brownish, round spots, each with a yellow halo. The affected regions darken and form sunken lesions. The tissue underneath the lesions is brown and extends to the beans inside. In mature pods, the browning is restricted to the upper fleshy tissues. In advanced stages, the lesions coalesce to form large, discolored, irregular areas.
