Host: Panicum antidotale Retz. (blue panicgrass)Disease name: SmutPathogen name: Tilletia tumefaciens Syd. & P. Syd.
Smut gall on blue panicgrass.
Tilletia tumefaciens causes galls to form on the vegetative parts, shoots, and axillary buds of Panicum antidotale. The surfaces of the infected host tissues rapidly blacken because of the large numbers of powdery ustilospores shed on them. Smutted buds have a strong odor similar to that caused by wheat bunt and presumably due to the presence of trimethylamine. The main culm usually develops beyond the infected axillary buds, and a normal inflorescence forms. The disease occurs in India and Pakistan.
