Cephaleuros virescens is a parasitic green alga that produces orange yellow, roughly circular specks to big patches on the upper surfaces of guava leaves. The patches may be few or numerous, crowded or scattered, and may occupy any part of the leaf. The pathogen grows between the cuticle and epidermis and penetrates the epidermal cells. Infection is not common on fruits. This disease is sometimes called “red rust.”
