Rust is one of the major foliar diseases of pearl millet in India and other parts of the world. Its impact on grain yield reduction depends upon its severity and stages of crop growth. In fodder crops, it affects the taste and thus palatability. The rust fungus is macrocyclic, and uredinial, telial, and basidial stages occur on pearl millet. The spermagonial and aecial stages are seen on Solanum hosts, particularly S. melongena (eggplant, or brinjal), which serves as an alternate host.
