Downy mildew is systemic in nature and infects young plants. Severely infected plants are stunted and chlorotic and do not produce tillers or panicles. Asexual sporulation can often be seen on the abaxial side of chlorotic leaves. At a later stage, the floral parts are converted into leafy structures, which often resemble witches’-brooms.
