Loose smut of wheat is a common disease throughout the wheat-growing regions of the world. The mycelium remains dormant in the embryo, and developing kernels are replaced by black teliospores. No seeds develop in infected heads. The disease is spread by windblown teliospores. Cool, humid weather favors the development of this disease.
