The image shows urediniospores of Phakopsora pachyrhizi on a soybean trichome and a surrounding infecting hypha expanding throughout the trichome. Soybean rust, caused by Phakopsora pachyrhizi Sydow, is a wind-borne fungal disease recently introduced into most of the soybean production areas of the U.S. The survival and spread of this biotrophic pathogen depends on the continuous production of urediniospores.
