grew up in Indiana. He received his B.A. (1977) in Zoology from DePauw University, and M.S. (1980) and Ph.D. (1983) in Entomology from Ohio State University. He joined the USDA-ARS Honey Bee Breeding, Genetics & Physiology Laboratory in 1983 as a Research Entomologist and investigated Africanized honey bees in Venezuela and Guatemala. In 1994 Dr. Hellmich switched insects when he joined the USDA-ARS, Corn Insects and Crop Genetics Research Laboratory in Ames, Iowa. The mission of this lab is to develop sustainable ways to manage insect pests of corn. His research focuses on European corn borer ecology and genetics, and insect resistance management (IRM) and transgenic corn. He is a leader of the NC205 Regional Research Committee that has coordinated a partnership approach to IRM that includes growers, academics, seed companies, and regulators.
