The small-fruited (0.8 ? 3.0 cm, 0.8 g) pepper accession Perennial (H. B. Singh, Plant Introduction Division, New Delhi, India) was used in crosses with several bell pepper cultivars. Based on symptomatology in the field, disease caused by cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) developed more slowly in tolerant progeny than in susceptible lines when seedlings of both types were inoculated with a collection of CMV strains. Lines carrying the Perennial source of resistance yielded similarly to uninoculated lines. Although Perennial is considered to be immune with mono-genic resistance to CMV in India, our findings and similar results from France (1) suggest that Perennial provides tolerance to CMV with poly-genic inheritance. After backcrossing and selling cycles, CMV-tolerant individuals were selected in the BCF2 and BCF3 generations. From these lines, hornozygotic tolerant lines that produced fruit weighing 100-110 g were obtained.
