Fifty-five samples of rice (Oryza saliva L.) were collected from several seed lots obtained from major rice-growing areas in Taiwan during 1986 and 1987. Twenty-five different fungi were isolated by standard blotter (1) and deep-freezing blotter methods (2). Isolated for the first time in Taiwan were Acremoniella atra (Corda) Sacc, Alternaria tenuis Nees, Ascochyta oryzae Cattaneo, Curvularia affinis Boedijn, C. brachyspora Boedijn, C. clavata Jain, C. pallescens Boedijn, Diplodia oryzae Miyake, Drechslera halodes (Drechsler) Subram. & Jain, D. poae (Baudys) Shoemaker, D. rostrata (Drechsler) Richardson & Fraser, Fusarium lateritium Nees:Fr., F. semitectum Berk. & Ravenel, Rhynchosporium oryzae Hashioka & Yokogi, and Trichoconis padwickii Ganguly. A. oryzae, D. halodes, D. rostrata, R. oryzae, and T. padwickii were pathogenic to rice plants under greenhouse conditions (28 ± 4 C) Koch’s postulates were followed. Phyllosticta glumarum (Ellis & Tracy) Miyake and R. oryzae were more frequent on rice seed from northern and eastern Taiwan than on seed from central and southern areas, and Curvularia lunata (Wakk.) Boedijn and T. padwickii were more frequent on seed from central and southern Taiwan than on seed from northern and eastern areas.
