In July 1991, large filamentous particles characteristic of barley yellow streak mosaic virus (BaYSMV) were identified by immunosorbent electron microscopy and antiserum SC450 (2) and by thin-section electron microscopy in symptomatic barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) leaves collected from the Pocatello Valley in Oneida County, Idaho. Lear symptoms consisted of yellow-green mosaic, streaking, and severe necrosis. At least 400 ha of the barley cultivars Otis and Korol were affected. The plants were grown under dryland conditions, and the brown wheat mite (Petrobia larens Muller) vector was abundant in many of the affected fields. This is the first report of BaYSMV infecting barley in Idaho and only the second rcport of the virus occurring in the United States (1).
