First Report of Meloidogyne graminicola in Georgia. N. A. Minton, USDA-ARS, Coastal Plain Experiment Station, Tifton, GA 31793. E. T. Tucker, and A. M. Golden. USDA-ARS, Coastal Plain Experiment Station, Tifton, GA 31793, and USDA-ARS, Beltsville, MD 20705. Plant Dis. 71:376. Accepted for publication 13 January 1987. In 1984, the rice root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne graminicola Golden & Birchfield 1965, was found on purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L.) at the Southeast Georgia Experiment Station, Midville. Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) and soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) were not infected. The nematode was cultured in a greenhouse on the nutsedge. Purple nutsedge, yellow nutsedge (C. esculentus L.), and Coker 983 wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were inoculated with single egg masses, and the nematode infected and reproduced on all plants. This is the only known occurrence of M. graminicola in the United States outside of Louisiana and is the first report of yellow nutsedge and wheat hosts. The source of infestation is not known. Previously reported hosts of M. graminicola in the United States are barnyard grass (Echinochloa colonum L.), purple nutsedge, rice (Oryza sativa L.), oat (Avena sativa L.), bush bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.), foxtail grass (Alopecurus carolinianus Walt.), and goosefoot grass (Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn.) (1,2).
