Race 13 (67S8) of Puccinia striiformis Virulent on Triticum spelta var. album in India. S. Nagarajan, Regional Station, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Flowerdale, Simla 171 002, India. S. K. Nayar, and P. Bahadur, Regional Station, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Flowerdale, Simla 171 002, India. Plant Dis. 70:173. Accepted for publication 9 October 1985. Copyright 1986 The American Phytopathological Society. DOI: 10.1094/PD-70-173d.

To develop a virulence analysis procedure suited for needs in India, primary leaves of Chinese 166 (Yr1), Heines VII (Yr2), Vilmorin-23 (Yr3), Hybrid 46 (Yr4b), Triticum spelta L. var. album Perc. (Yr5), Heines Kolben (Yr6), Lee (Yr7), Compair (Yr8), Reibesel 47/51 (Yr9), Moro (PI 178383) (Yr10), Suwon 92 × Omar, Strubes Dickkopf, Kalyansona, and Sonalika were inoculated with individual races of Puccinia striiformis Westend. Race 13 (67S8) was virulent on T. spelta album at 20 C, above which necrotic spots occurred. This glasshouse observation was confirmed under controlled growth chamber conditions. The avirulence/virulence formula of race 13 (67S8) is Yr2, Yr3, Yr4b, Yr6, Yr8, Yr9, Yr10, Strubes Dickkopf, Kalyansona, Sonalika/ Yr1, Yr5, Yr7, Suwon 92 × Omar. Such variation in virulence partly explains the susceptible reaction of T. spelta album in the international wheat nurseries planted in India. Yr5 is susceptible (to different races) for the first time in India and in Australia (C. R. Wellings, personal communication) but is immune in the United States and West Europe.
