Disease Note

New Hosts of the Parasitic Lichen Strigula. G. E. Holcomb, Department of Plant Pathology and Crop Physiology, Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge 70803. Plant Dis. 69:1100. Accepted for publication 7 August 1985. Copyright 1985 The American Phytopathological Society. DOI: 10.1094/PD-69-1100e.

Strigula elegans (Fée) Müll. Arg. and S. camplanata (Fée) Mont. are foliicolous lichen parasites that contain the green alga Cephaleuros Kunze as the phycobiont. They are known to occur in the southern United States but are more common in tropical areas. These organisms are not well known by plant pathologists because of their minor role as parasites and their small size. The following are new host records of these two parasitic Strigula spp.: Acer negundo L., A. rubrum L., Asimina triloba (L.) Dunal, Aster praealtus Poir., Ligustrum lucidum Ait., L. sinense Lour., Liquidambar styraciflua L., Lonicera japonica Thunb., Mahonia fortunei (Lindl.) Fedde, Magnolia virginiana L., Matelea carolinensis (Jacq.) Woodson, Myrica cerifera L., Parthenocissus quinquefolia (L.) Planch., Quercus virginiana Mill., Rhus radicans L., and Solanum pseudocapsicum L.
