Disease Note

Ascochyta rabiei on Chickpea in Ontario, Canada. J. C. Tu, Harrow Research Station, Agriculture Canada, Harrow, Ontario NOR 1GO. R. J. Hall, Libby, McNeill & Libby of Canada, Chatham, Ontario N7M 1T7. Plant Dis. 68:826. Accepted for publication 20 June 1984. Copyright 1984 The American Phytopathological Society. DOI: 10.1094/PD-68-826g.

A severe Ascochyta blight was found in a field plot of chickpea (Cicer arieiinum L.) at Chatham, Ontario, Canada, in July 1983. Lesions were usually circular on leaves and pods, ranging from 1 to 15 mm in diameter, and elongated and cankerous on stems and petioles, often girdling them. Leaves and branches were often killed. The disease appeared to originate in the cultivar Spanish imported from Turkey, and isolations from diseased plants and from remnant seed yielded Ascochyta rabiei (Pasc.) Lab. Chickpea was successfully reinoculated with the fungus. Cultures were deposited at the Biosystematics Research Institute (DAOM 188526), Agriculture Canada, Ottawa, and at the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC 56133) at Rockville, MD. This is the first report of this fungus on chickpea in Ontario. A previous unrelated report of the fungus came from Saskatchewan in 1974.
