First Report of Heterodera glycines on Soybeans in the Southern High Plains of Texas. C. C. Orr, USDA-ARS, Cropping Systems Research Laboratory, Lubbock TX 79401.,. R. D. Brigham, Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, and R. W. Berry, Texas Agricultural Extension Service, Lubbock. Plant Dis. 68:628. Accepted for publication 2 March 1984. Copyright 1984 The American Phytopathological Society. DOI: 10.1094/PD-68-628a.

The soybean cyst nematode, Heterodera glyrines Ichinohe, was found in soil samples and on roots of soybeans (Glycine rnax (L.) Merr. 'Crawford') from 1 ha of reduced stand and severely stunted, chlorotic plants. Field symptoms were apparent but diminished in the direction of irrigation water flow. Many white and brown cysts were found on the roots of infected plants. Since confirmation of the pest in July 1983, seven additional locations within a 20-mi radius of Plainview, TX, were positively shown to contain soybean cyst nematode. Counties involved were Hale, Floyd, and Swisher, located in the Southern High Plains of Texas. Previous reports of soybean cyst nematodes in Texas were in three counties in the northeast bordering on Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma. This report of soybean cyst nematode is about 500 mi from other known areas of infestation.
