Disease Note. Hosta: A New Host Record for Aphelenchoides fragariae. . G. R. Noel, USDA-ARS, Department of Plant Pathology, and D. DOI: 10.1094/PD-78-0924C. Tan-colored interveinal lesions were observed on leaves of Hosta sp. (an interspecies cross) cv. Amy Aden obtained from an outdoor demonstration garden in east central Illinois in the summer of 1992. Necrotic tissue was excised from leaves and placed in water in Syracuse watch glasses. Nematodes migrated from the leaf tissue and were collected for identification. Male and female nematodes were heat relaxed in water prior to mounting in water on Cobb slides, whereas others were placed in 2% formalin on slides to facilitate observation of the lateral field. Morphological measurements were made using a camera lucida having a first surface mirror, and DeMan’s formula was used to determine pertinent values. The species was identified as Aphelenchoides fragariae (Ritzema Bos 1891) Christie 1932. Plants from which A. fragariae was obtained were several years old. The nematode also was found at a nursery in 1992 on Hosta sp. obtained from Long Island, New York. All outdoor plants and plants received in the shipment from Long Island were destroyed. Symptoms have not been observed on Hosta sp. grown in greenhouses owned by the nursery. |
