Gary P. Munkvold is a native of Illinois. He received B.S. (1986) and M.S. (1988) degrees in Forestry and Plant Pathology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology in 1992 from the University of California, Davis. He joined the faculty of Iowa State University in 1993 and has served as Assistant Professor (1993-98) and Associate Professor (1998-) and Extension Plant Pathologist. He has research and extension responsibilities for disease management in corn, forage crops, and small grains. His research activities focus on Fusarium diseases of corn, gray leaf spot (Cercospora zeae-maydis) of corn, and the relationships of pathogen and disease spatial patterns with dispersal and crop yield loss. Teaching responsibilities include a course in field plant pathology and 2 on-line IPM courses offered through the Iowa State University M.S. Agronomy program. He is Associate Editor for the journal Plant Disease and Section Editor for Biological and Cultural Tests. |

Rick Hellmich grew up in Indiana. He received his B.A. (1977) in Zoology from DePauw University, and M.S. (1980) and Ph.D. (1983) in Entomology from Ohio State University. He joined the USDA-ARS Honey Bee Breeding, Genetics & Physiology Laboratory in 1983 as a Research Entomologist and investigated Africanized honey bees in Venezuela and Guatemala. In 1994 Dr. Hellmich switched insects when he joined the USDA-ARS, Corn Insects and Crop Genetics Research Laboratory in Ames, Iowa. The mission of this lab is to develop sustainable ways to manage insect pests of corn. His research focuses on European corn borer ecology and genetics, and insect resistance management (IRM) and transgenic corn. He is a leader of the NC205 Regional Research Committee that has coordinated a partnership approach to IRM that includes growers, academics, seed companies, and regulators. He has authored papers on diverse topics including Africanized bee mating biology, European corn borer ecology, and insect resistance management. Dr. Hellmich also is a USDA Collaborator with the Iowa State University Department of Entomology. |
