Meet New Office of Industry Relations Director Vince Morton

Vince Morton, consultant, Viva, Inc., became the second APS Office of Industry Relations (OIR) director during the recent APS Annual Meeting in Anaheim, CA. Morton succeeds Chris Becker who facilitated the initiation of this new Office during his term as OIR director (2001–2004). Morton will serve as OIR director through 2007. OIR’s mission is to develop visionary dialog for the long-term health of APS and its interactions with industry by optimizing interactions between APS and its members on matters pertaining to the diverse industries related to plant disease management and strengthening advocacy for science-based public policy.

Morton is looking forward to his term, “I see the role of this board as a liaison between the APS members and council to those representing the interests of agro-business. The crop science companies have met the challenges of satisfying the world’s food needs. Their R&D driven technology is committed to further development of sustainable agriculture to feed the rising global population. The required investment and innovation can only be maintained if regulation, both in the U.S. and internationally, is led by science and not political expedience.”

Maintaining strong affiliations will be critical in the future. “Typically the concerns of industry include developing new varieties, crop protection products, and services for use in the integrated management of diseases. Key to the introduction of new products is a rapport with regulatory officials, university and federal researchers, and extension services” says Morton. “While the number of basic manufacturers has dwindled to six key firms, there has been a substantial growth in generic firms. As I see it, APS needs a stronger affiliation with these companies, as well as with seed companies. Many new traits are being incorporated into seed, including disease resistance. There is also the need to improve monitoring of new pathogen introductions via seed, because much of the U.S. seed is produced offshore.”

Top issues to be addressed by the OIR Board during Morton’s term will include

  • Making society and APS members aware of the value of fungicides in modern agriculture.
  • Research on the optimal use of fungicides in IPM. It is not when all else has failed that one should turn to fungicides, since for most products, the curative use is not the best approach.
  • The role of industry and university extension service in educating producers on integrated disease management through new products and services.
  • Support of the FRAC (Fungicide Resistance Action Committee) guidelines.
  • Actively coordinating regulatory issues relating to biotechnology, chemicals, and diagnostics and providing input to EPA on questions relating to these issues.
  • Growing opportunities for industry internships for students and faculty.
  • Expanding APS influence with seed producers and biotech firms.
  • Assist APS to build transparent two-way communication with consumers regarding food quality and safety. The public distrusts both science and risk assessments, yet we are living longer in a more stressful environment.

Vince Morton grew up in South Africa. After completing a B.S. degree at the University of Natal, he immigrated to the United States. After exposure to citrus grove management in Florida, he completed M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Florida. He worked for Geigy/CIBA-Geigy/Novartis Crop Protection for 30 years. After retiring in 1997, Morton established his own consulting firm, Viva, Inc. He has been an active member of APS for many years and has served on numerous committees. He received the first APS Excellence in Industry Award in 1998.
