July 31 – August 4, 2004 • Anaheim, California
The 2004 APS
Annual Meeting Program Committee, chaired by Jim MacDonald, has assembled an
outstanding, diverse
scientific program for the APS Annual Meeting in Anaheim, CA, July 31 – August
4, 2004. The meeting will be kicked off with a plenary session, organized by
Gary Bergstrom, titled “Networks for Plant Health.” Plenary session speakers
will highlight the positive roles that APS and allied professional societies are
playing and can play in building and maintaining effective
networks for plant health.
The special sessions feature the most current developments in plant pathology:
- Active management of soil microorganisms for plant root disease
control
- Soil health and nematodes
- Organic foods – From production to market
- The nature and application of biocontrol microbes II: Trichoderma spp.
- Food safety as influenced by phyllosphere microflora
- Challenges at the urban/ag interface
- Adapting teaching styles and techniques for a changing student
population
- Enhancing biosafety and biosecurity in classrooms and laboratories
- Plant pathology in historical perspective
- Coevolution of fungi and plants
- Current insights into the genetics, toxicology, and plant pathology of
Fusarium verticillioides
- Coevolutionary processes of introduced pathogens and hosts in a
natural ecosystem
- Closteroviruses – Citrus tristeza virus complex and tristeza disease
- Pepino mosaic virus in tomato
- Risk and risk management associated with the international movement of
plants for planting
- Targeted sampling for pathogen detection to meet quarantine and
certification requirements
- The plant pathologist’s toolkit for responding to crop biosecurity
threats
- Genome annotation of plant pathogens
- Rice: A model crop that has pushed the frontiers of plant pathology
and our understanding of host-pathogen interactions
- Suppression of host defense responses by pathogens
- Host-microbe interactions in woody plants
- Interactions between plant pathogens and their vectors
- Species concept in host-pathogen interactions: What is its effect on
breeding for resistance?
- Functional genomics meets bacterial diseases
- Life styles and genomics of fastidious and gram-positive bacteria
- Fungal melanins: Biology and pathogenesis
- Fungicides: From discovery to market launch, and some of the practical
aspects of working with fungicides
- Reality CV: Recent successful job applicants and field leaders tell it
like it is about the present and future of plant pathology careers.
Several workshops will be featured at the meeting to provide attendees with
in-depth information on a variety of topics:
- Analysis of microbial population genetic data
- Demystifying PCR technologies for plant pathologists
- The first steps for a successful job search in industry: Writing the
resumé, finding the opening, and fine-tuning interview skills
- Linear mixed models for analyzing data obtained in designed
experiments
- Methods in functional genomics
- Turfgrass disease diagnostics workshop
In addition, there will be enhanced opportunities for viewing posters and
networking through “beer and bull” sessions in the poster area. The meeting will
take place at the Anaheim Convention Center and Hilton Hotel, which are located
in the heart of an area known as the “Anaheim Resort District.” This newly
designed area features hundreds of fashion-setting stores and boutiques,
restaurants, cafes, and microbreweries. Anaheim’s state-of-the-art transit
system provides shuttle service from the convention center and hotel to the
numerous venues located within the 1,100-acre Anaheim Resort District.
