Tragic Loss of Phytopathology News
Editor Stephen Johnston
APS
Phytopathology News Editor and APS Council member, Stephen A. Johnston, plant
pathology extension specialist with Rutgers University, passed away on
Wednesday, April 16 at Christiana Hospital in Newark, DE from injuries he
sustained while helping a friend remove a tree. He is survived by his wife Faith
and their two sons Adam and Matthew. Steve brought his own style and good nature
to our society’s newsletter over the past year, and was a thoughtful and
insightful member of APS’s governing board. He will be missed greatly. The
family is arranging for a scholarship fund in Steve’s name at Rutgers
University. More complete information on Johnston’s contributions to APS and
plant pathology will be included in the July issue of Phytopathology News.
APS President Jacque Fletcher is currently working on filling the vacancy in the
editorial position for Phytopathology News. During the transition please forward
all submissions to Michelle Bjerkness, mbjerkness@scisoc.org.

The APS officer election is upon us, and it is time to vote for new APS
officers. Again this year, casting your vote is easy—members will simply
vote online for the election.
Candidates John H. Andrews, University of Wisconsin, and John L. Sherwood,
University of Georgia, have graciously accepted the responsibility of
running for election as APS vice president. Likewise, Bruce B. Clarke,
Rutgers University, and Allison H. Tally, Syngenta Crop Protection, have
agreed to stand for election as councilor-at-large. Profiles on all of the
candidates are available for your review beginning on page 60.
Nominations were received from APS members. The Nominating Committee, which
consists of the intermediate councilor-at-large as chair and the division
councilors, selected candidates from the nominees using the procedures
described in the APS Manual of Operations. APS Council shall declare the
officers elected based on a plurality vote. Results of the election will be
announced in the July issue of Phytopathology News and on APSnet.
Last year’s online election process increased voter participation and also
saved the society time and money. With the success of last year’s process,
the online election is being continued this year. An e-mail message was sent
to all members on April 29, 2003, with instructions for voting online. Those
members without an e-mail address on file at APS Headquarters were sent
letters with instructions. We encourage all members to take a few minutes
and cast your vote. Ballots must be submitted by May 30, 2002. All votes are
confidential. Your contribution is essential to the success of this
process—so vote today!
