pathologists, chaired by Steve Johnston and Chris Becker. The team of
students from Université Laval was victorious in the game of
phytopathological “Jeopardy” hosted by Gail Schumann during the
social.
A symposium on apple scab organized by Odile Carisse and a molecular
biology keynote address by Ray Hammerschmidt highlighted the first day of
the meeting. David McNally of Université Laval won the Graduate Student
Paper Competition with his presentation “An improved methodology for
characterizing novel phytoalexins from Cucumis sativus L.,” coauthored
by C. Labbé and R. R. Bélanger. Kurt Lamour of Michigan State University
and Mélanie Mecteau from Université Laval were runners-up for the award.
Chris Becker presented the Award of Merit on behalf of the division to two
recipients: Ken Hickey of Penn State University and Steve Slack of Ohio
State were acknowledged for their significant accomplishments and
dedicated contributions to the region. Peter Oudemans of Rutgers was
honored with the new Early Career Award. Bruce Clarke presented a plaque
to Division President Richard Bélanger recognizing his exemplary service.
Banquet entertainment was provided by George Hudler, who with his daughter
Jennifer presented “Great Moments in History and How the Fungi Got Us
There.”
