Student Oral Presentation/Poster Awards
(The tour and both workshops will be held on Wednesday, June 14 from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.)
University of Illinois Campus and Research Tour: University of Illinois Campus and Research Tour: The first part of the tour will be a two hour excursion through the University of Illinois campus on a 15-person-powered pedal car, which will meander through campus and visit historic and interesting sites. The next phase of the tour will be a visit to plant pathology research plots on the University South Farms and the Japanese Gardens at the University of Illinois Arboretum. The tour is limited to 30 people (10 person minimum). $30.00 Fee
Careers 101 Workshop: Professional Presentations and Honing Soft Skills. In the Careers 101 workshop, you will learn tips for improving and enhancing scientific presentations and for developing and honing soft skills during your graduate school or post doc career. Following the workshop presentations, you will have the chance to practice and apply your learnings in a fun, interactive, and low-stress setting. Come join us to learn, ask questions, and network with your peers from other institutions in the North Central region. $10.00 Fee
R Workshop: Introduction to R for Plant Pathologists. This workshop will introduce participants to R, using specific examples from plant pathology. Participants will learn how to: read in data, manipulate data, summarize and visualize data, perform comparisons, find and load packages, and troubleshoot common problems. This workshop will use base packages and newer tools, such as dplyr and ggplot2. Participants are expected to bring their own laptop with an up-to-date version of R installed. This workshop will be tailored to the experience level of each participant, so that everyone will come out learning something new. Instructors: Sydney Everhart, Alex Lipka, Zhian Kamvar. $10.00 Fee

Abstract submission deadline is Friday, May 12
You are invited to submit abstracts for the 2017 North Central Division Meeting. If you would like your abstract published, a $50 fee is required and payment must be remitted via your meeting registration. We encourage graduate students to participate in the competition – please check the box “This paper is for the student paper competition” on the online submission form.
Note: There is a limit of 12 oral presentations, first-come-first-serve, for the graduate student competition. If there are more than 10 abstracts submitted for graduate student oral presentations, they will become poster presentations. Non-students will present posters only.
The presentations are given 15 min each, but you should leave 3 min for questions from the audience (approximately a 12 minute total).
Poster presentation guidelines: Posters will follow standard APS guidelines and must not exceed 46 inches wide by 45 inches high.
