a) Statistics Workshop: Meta-analysis (Madden& Paul) - $10.00 Wednesday, June 13, 2:00 pm - 5:00 pmThe synthesis of results from multiple studies is of fundamental importance in the scientific endeavor. Meta-analysis is a very popular tool for combining results from separate studies in a formal manner, and this methodology has recently become more common in plant pathology. This workshop will provide an overview of meta-analysis, and teach the methodology using example data sets. The workshop will be based on the use of SAS, although code in R will be provided for selected analyses. Attendees should bring a laptop with SAS 9.22 [same as 9.2 (TS2M3)] or 9.3 installed.
b) Workshop on Bioinformatics for Beginning Plant Pathologists (McSpadden-Gardner & Mitchell) $10.00 - Friday, June 15, 8:00 am - Noon.
Sequencing of nucleic acids provides a unique glimpse into the structures and activities of cells. Because of this, analyses of genome content and gene structure become the starting point for generating new hypotheses about the nature of pathogens, their hosts, and other plant-associated microorganisms. This workshop will introduce fundamental bioninformatic procedures and the questions such procedures are designed to address through the use of various online software programs. Students need to register in advance so that demo files and web links can be downloaded prior to the workshop.
