Dear Colleague, This is the first mail announcement for the 2002 meeting of the Potomac Division of APS, which will be a joint meeting with ERCERIM (Eastern Regional Conference on the Ecology of Root-Infecting Microorganisms). The meeting will be held on March 4-6, 2002 at the Fort Magruder Radisson in Wiliamsburg, VA, located within walking distance of Colonial Williamsburg! The meeting will have particular focus on soilborne organisms, but will also include updates in other areas, as well as contributed papers and posters. A tentative meeting program is enclosed. More detailed program information will be included in the second mailing and will also be posted at http://www.bsi.vt.edu/Baudoin/potomac/ Hotels. A block of rooms has been reserved at special rates for the ERCERIM and APS Joint Meeting at the Radisson Fort Magruder Inn and Conference Center, 6945 Pocahontas Trail, Williamsburg, VA. It is your responsibility to make your own lodging reservations. Please call the hotel at 800-333-3333 and ask for in-house reservations. Reservations must be made by February 4 to receive the discounted group rate of $59, single or double (plus tax). This same special rate will be available for people who would like to come earlier and spend a weekend in the Williamsburg area (available from March 1 to March 10). You must mention the ERCERIM or APS Meeting to obtain the special rate. Additional charges do exist for triple or quad occupancy as well as a $10 fee for roll-away beds. Driving directions, Airports, shuttle service Meeting registration. The registration fee is $125 per person, if registered by February 15th. After this date, the fee is $145. Registration fees reflect a longer program (2 1/2 days), meeting costs, and many meals included, but we were able to negotiate a very reasonable lodging rate to keep your total travel costs down. The deadline for receipt of titles for contributed papers and posters is Friday, February 1, 2002. Posters are encouraged. Titles may be e-mailed (preferred), mailed, or faxed to Jim Kotcon. Abstracts for contributed papers are optional. Abstracts that are received by Feb 15 will be made available at the meeting. Each abstract submitted should be on a Division Abstract Form AND on a diskette, and must conform to the instructions available on the form and on APSNet. An abstract form is enclosed, and is also available for download in pdf format and MS Word format. The original of the abstract plus a check for $45.00 are required. Organizations sending multiple abstracts are encouraged to collect and send all abstracts in one unit. Make checks payable to POTOMAC DIVISION, APS. Abstracts not accompanied by the $45.00 fee will not be published in Phytopathology. Abstracts submitted too late for inclusion on the abstract booklet will be published on APSNet and in Phytopathology as long as they are submitted by the time of the meeting. Titles, abstracts, and diskettes, all should be sent to Jim Kotcon, Secretary-Treasurer (address, see above). Payment can be made with meeting registration, or a separate check may be sent to Jim Kotcon. Graduate Student Paper Competition. A first and second place award of $250 and $100, respectively, is available. To be eligible for this competition you must: 1) be a member of the Potomac Division; 2) have been a graduate student in an accredited graduate school at the time the research was done; 3) present the research no later than one year following receipt of the graduate degree; 4) be the sole or senior author and the only student author under consideration for the award; 5) submit the title by February 1 and abstract to be received by February 15. Call for Nominations. Please submit nominations for Vice-President (1-year term, advances to President and IPP), and for the Distinguished Service Award. Listings of current and past officers and Distinguished Service Award recipients may be found on the nomination form. The Distinguished Service Award will be presented during the annual meeting banquet. Please take some time to think about colleagues who are worthy of recognition, and then take a little more time to submit a nomination. A Vice President will be elected for the term that begins after the annual meeting in 2002. Nominations Committee Chair Vern Damsteegt must receive nominations (clearly identifying office, nominee, as well as nominator) via mail, fax, or e-mail by February 1 to consider your nominations.
