"Bridging Technology Gaps in Education and Research"The third joint meeting of the Potomac and Northeast Divisions of the American Phytopathological Society will be held at Loews Hotel in Annapolis, MD on March 10-12, 1999. The first joint meeting (in 1994) was very successful despite a raging blizzard, and was hosted by both divisions. The well-attended 1996 meeting was hosted by the Northeast Division in Long Branch, New Jersey, and the Potomac Division will reciprocate by hosting the current meeting. This year's joint meeting promises to be very exciting and informative, and the program committee has organized special sessions around a central theme "Bridging Technology Gaps in Education and Research." A block of rooms will be held at the Loews Annapolis Hotel until Feb. 10. (We can adjust the guaranteed room block until Jan. 15, so reserve your room early!). Loews is a AAA Four-Diamond award-winning, full-service hotel just three blocks from historic downtown Annapolis and the City Docks. Reservations may be make by telephone (1-800-526-2593). Mention "Potomac and Northeastern Division APS meeting" for a discounted room rate as follows: $115 for a single, $125 for a double, and an additional $10.00 per person for 3 or 4 people to a room. (Note: the first mailing (snail mail and email) gave the national Loews number which does not have the discount information; the number given here is for the Annapolis hotel) Meeting registration. Contributed Papers, Posters, and Abstracts. The deadline for receipt of titles for contributed papers and posters is January 27, 1999. Posters are encouraged. Titles may be e-mailed (preferred), mailed, or faxed to Anton Baudoin. Information needed:
Abstracts for contributed papers are optional. Abstracts that are received by Feb. 17 will be made available at the meeting. Each abstract submitted must be on a Division Abstract Form AND on a diskette, and must conform to the instructions enclosed (also available on APSNet (click here). The original of the abstract plus a check for $30.00 are required. Organizations sending multiple abstracts are encouraged to collect and send all abstracts in one unit. Make checks payable to POTOMAC DIVISION, APS. Abstracts not accompanied by the $30.00 fee will not be published in Phytopathology. Abstracts submitted too late for inclusion on the abstract booklet will be published on APSNet and in Phytopathology as long as they are submitted by the time of the meeting. Send titles, abstracts, diskettes, and checks to: Anton Baudoin. Secretary-Treasurer Graduate Student Paper Competition (Potomac Division). The first and second place winners will receive a check for $250 and $100, respectively. To be eligible for this competition you must: 1) be a member of the Potomac Division; 2) have been a graduate student in an accredited graduate school at the time the research was done; 3) present the research no later than one year following receipt of the graduate degree; 4) be the sole or senior author and the only student author under consideration for the award; 5) submit the title by January 27 and abstract by Feb 17. Graduate Student Paper Competition (Northeast Division). The first place winners will receive 1) a one year subscription to the 3 APS Journals, and 2) a $500 travel award in order for the student to attend an-other meeting of value to the student or their research. Titles must be submitted by January 27 with ab-stract by Feb 17. Call for Nominations (Potomac Division). Please submit nominations for Vice-President and for the annual Distinguished Service Award. Listings of current and past officers and past Distinguished Service Award recipients may be found here. The Distinguished Service Award will be presented during the annual meeting banquet. Please take some time to think about colleagues who are worthy of recognition, and submit a nomination. A Vice President will be elected for the term that begins after the annual meeting in 1999. Past-president and Nominations Committee Chairman Ethel Dutky must receive nomination forms (or equivalent information by fax or e-mail) by Jan. 27 to consider your nominations. Memorial Fund Graduate Student Travel Grant Award (Potomac Division). The award is make from the interest generated on the Memorial Fund Account. The money is to be used to support the academic or research development of a graduate student within the Potomac Division member institutions. The award may be used, for example, to support travel to an international or national meeting, symposium, or workshop; or to support travel and lodging to gain specific research experience in a laboratory outside of the student's institution and geographic location.
