Pre- and Post-Conference Workshops
Four workshops will be held in conjunction with the North Central Division meeting. Workshops are open to APS members and to non-members. You may register for a workshop only (meeting not included), and/or register to attend the full meeting as a non-member. Use the following links to access the online registration form (for APS members only) or a form for registering by mail or fax. Use the second option if you are not an APS member and/or are not participating in the full meeting.

Corn Nematode Workshop Cost: $90.00
(pre-registration required)
Sunday, June 21, 8:30 am to 4:00 pm
Seed Science Center, Iowa State University Campus
Workshop Organizers:
Tamra Jackson, University of Nebraska
Ann MacGuidwin, University of Wisconsin
Tim Todd, Kansas State University
Greg Tylka, Iowa State University
This all-day workshop will cover the basics of the biology and management of plant-parasitic nematodes that can damage corn. Specific topics of discussion will include the life cycle of plant-parasitic nematodes, their feeding habits, a review of the nematode species that can damage corn, the symptoms of nematode damage on corn, sampling to determine if nematodes are damaging corn, and current and future management options for nematodes on corn. The workshop is being organized and will be taught by nematologists from four land-grant universities in the Midwest.

Disease Assessment Workshop Cost: $50.00
(pre-registration required)
Sunday, June 21, 1:30 to 5:00 pm
Gateway Hotel, Ames, IA
Workshop Organizers:
Forrest W. Nutter, Jr., Iowa State University
Paul D. Esker, University of Wisconsin - Madison
The cost-efficient application of any disease management program requires accurate and precise information concerning the quantitative measure of disease intensity. Accurate measures of disease intensity provide a quantitative link between management theory and practice. Participants will each receive one copy of a computer disease assessment training program.
This workshop will (i) revisit the pyschophysical laws that underpin visual disease assessment theory, (ii) provide hands-on experience in assessing disease severity using the computer program Severity.Pro, and (iii) teach workshop participants how to generate standard area diagrams (assessment keys) in color for numerous leaf shapes and lesion types. Workshop topics include:
Disease intensity concepts
The Weber-Fechner Law
Repeal of the Horsfall-Barrett Scale and Why
One-hour Teaching Module Using Severity.Pro Software
Generating Standard Area Diagrams (In Color)

Walking Tour of Plant Diseases on Iowa State Campus Cost: Free
Sunday, June 21, 2:00 to 4:00 pm
Workshop Organizer:
Thomas Harrington, Iowa State University
Examples of some of Iowa’s common disease problems on street trees will be pointed out in a 2 hour walking tour of the Iowa State University campus. Pre-registration is not required for this tour. This is a free tour. Spouses and conference guests are welcome to participate.

Seed Health Testing Workshop Cost: $35.00
(Pre-registration required; limited to 24 participants)
Tuesday, June 23, 1:30 to 5:00 pm
Seed Science Center, ISU Campus
Workshop Organizers:
Gary Munkvold, Seed Science Center, Iowa State University
Lisa Shepherd, Seed Science Center
Anania Fessehaie, Seed Science Center
This half-day workshop will cover the different types of tests commonly used in seed health testing: visual methods, incubation methods, bioassays, immunological assays, and nucleic-acid based methods. We will present short lectures and demonstrations, with some hands-on activities. Other issues related to seed health testing will be discussed, including the purposes for seed health testing, and some of the unique issues encountered in detecting pathogens in seed, including sampling and extraction, thresholds, and quarantine issues. The workshop will be presented by personnel from the ISU Seed Science Center seed testing and research programs.

Cucurbit Diseases Workshop Cost: $35.00
(pre-registration required)
Tuesday, June 23, 1:30 to 3:30 pm
Reiman Gardens
Speakers:
Mohammad Babadoost, University of Illinois
Brad Day, Michigan State University
Mark Gleason, Iowa State University
Meg McGrath, Cornell University
Cucurbit crops (melons, cucumbers, pumpkins, and squash) are grown throughout the North Central Region. This session reviews recent progress in understanding and managing some of the most challenging diseases of cucurbits: downy mildew, soilborne diseases, powdery mildew, and bacterial wilt. Brad Day of Michigan State will summarize research on downy mildew by his and Mary Hausbeck’s labs, and Meg McGrath of Cornell University will provide the latest findings of her powdery mildew program. In addition, Mohammad Babadoost will explore the latest findings on Phytophthora capsici and other soilborne pathogens, and Mark Gleason will summarize recent work on using row covers to combat bacterial wilt.
