North Central Division Meets at Iowa State University

Loren J. Giesler, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, North Central Division Secretary-Treasurer, lgiesler1@unl.edu

The 61st annual meeting of the APS North Central Division, hosted by Iowa State University (ISU), met at the Reiman Gardens in Ames, IA, from June 21 to June 23, 2009. Meeting attendees were provided with two very thorough symposia entitled “Implications of climate change on plant pathogens” and “Nematode pests of the north central region.” These were followed by a poster session, student presentations, and an evening banquet. Seventeen students within the division received travel awards to offset costs in attending the meeting this year. Students were nominated by their department to attend the meeting. The prestigious North Central Division Distinguished Service Award was presented to Forrest Nutter, ISU, at the evening banquet. Eight graduate students received an award for either their poster or oral presentations at an awards lunch the following day. Oral presentation winners were Achala Nepal, North Dakota State University (NDSU)—first place ($300); Zhifen Zhang, The Ohio State University (OSU)—second place ($150); and Valdir Correa and Margaret Lee Ellis, OSU—

tied for third place ($75 each). Winners of the poster competition were Jackson Moeller, ISU—first place ($300); Aakansha Gambhir, NDSU—second place ($150); and Chakradhar Mattupalli (University of Wisconsin) and Silvina M. Stewart (ISU)— tied for third place ($75 each).
