Renaissance Worthington Hotel, Ft. Worth, TX
This APS short course will be offered immediately prior to the SAAS / SDAPS annual meeting. This course reviews the basic principles of statistical analysis using agricultural and biological examples and introduces data analysis using Microsoft Excel programming. The registration fee is $495.00. For complete course information, see or call Heather Cronin at 651-454-7250 or hcronin@scisoc.org.
The
SDAPS program will consist of invited and contributed oral paper sessions.
Because of the emphasis on poster presentations at the national meeting, only oral papers will be accepted, not
posters. One hard copy and one diskette
copy of abstracts for oral presentations, along with a completed APS Division
Abstract Form, must be received by Bonnie
Ownley, Univ. of Tennessee, Entomology & Plant Pathology Dept., 2431 Center
Dr. Rm. 205, Knoxville, TN 37996-4500, postmarked no later than October 31, 2000.
Guidelines for abstracts are as follows: At least one author of each paper presented at the meeting must be an APS member. Only abstracts of those papers actually presented at the meeting will be published. Only unpublished information may be included. APS Division abstract guidelines, a sample format, and the division abstract form are available online on APSnet at http://www.apsnet.org/meetings/div/instruct.asp
If you cannot access this information, contact Anthony Keinath and he will fax a copy to you.
Fifteen minutes will be allowed for each oral paper, 12 minutes for presentation and 3 minutes for questions. Equipment for 2 X 2 slides will be available. The Abstract Review Committee of the Southern Division can reject any abstract not deemed fit for publication. Those not conforming to the required style will be returned to the author and must be resubmitted on or before the October 31 deadline for acceptance. Abstracts accepted and presented at the meeting will be printed in the Phytopathology Supplement in June 2001.
Abstract fees are $30.00 if paid by the deadline (October 31, 2000), $35.00 if more than 30 days late, and $40.00 if paid at the meeting. Payments for abstracts should be sent directly to the SDAPS secretary/treasurer, NOT to the President Elect. Send your invoice (page 7) plus check made payable to “SDAPS” (NOT payable to APS) to Anthony Keinath, Clemson University CREC, 2865 Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC 29414-5333. Please use the invoice on page 7 so that payments can be matched with abstracts.
Do
NOT send purchase orders or direct vouchers because they require extra handling
and postage. An abstract fee credit for papers not presented at the meeting can
be used for the next SDAPS meeting. RECEIPTS for abstracts may be requested at
the meeting but they cannot be mailed in advance.
SDAPS
GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH
AWARD
Graduate students are invited to enter the Graduate Student Research Award Competition. A plaque and monetary award will be given to the first and second place speakers. This is what two former winners had to say as they reflected on their experiences:
“[Winning the graduate student paper competition in 1996] increased my confidence. I never thought I was a good public speaker. Whenever I get those thoughts, I simply look up at the framed award on my wall and realize that I must be good at public speaking. It taught me the basics of doing a public, scientific presentation. I have used these skills often in my career. And it looks great on a resume.”
Robin Ross,
Novartis Crop Protection, Inc., Santa Maria, CA
“Winning the SDAPS student paper competition [in 1996] made a significant impact on my exposure to the American Phytopathological Society membership and aided in my current involvement in the Society through committee assignments. The recognition was a tremendous asset. .”
Peter Gay,
Research Assistant Professor, Alabama A&M Univ.
Submission of Papers Students competing for the award must 1) be an enrolled student in a graduate program in the Southern Division either at the time of, or within six months of, the abstract submission deadline (Oct. 31, 2000); 2) be a member in good standing of the Southern Division at the time the paper is presented (page 6); 3) be sole or senior author of the paper; and 4) present this paper at a meeting of the SDAPS. The paper must communicate results of research in plant pathology conducted while in the pursuit of a degree at a Southern Division college or university.
The Southern Division meeting registration fee will be waived for those students who participate in the Graduate Student Award Competition. A complimentary luncheon also will be provided for each student competing.
Students should mail FIVE hard copies of the abstract to Clayton Hollier, Cooperative Extension Service, P.O. Box 25100, Louisiana State Univ., Baton Rouge, LA 70894-5100, in addition to the one hard copy and one copy on diskette sent to President Elect Bonnie Ownley by October 31, 2000. Be sure to indicate on the division abstract form that the abstract is for the graduate student awards session. The $30.00 fee for publication of the abstract should be mailed to Anthony Keinath by October 31, 2000.
SDAPS GRAD STUDENT / POST DOC TRAVEL GRANTS
Two travel grants of $150 each will be awarded to Southern Division graduate students or postdoctoral researchers presenting a paper at the SDAPS meeting. Applicants competing for the award must be 1) an enrolled student in a graduate program in the Southern Division or a postdoctoral research associate at an institution in the Southern Division at the time of the abstract submission deadline or within six months of the abstract submission deadline and 2) be a member in good standing of the Southern Division at the time of the meeting (page 6). This year, students competing in the graduate student paper competition ARE eligible for a travel award.
Applicants should send six hard copies of the application (page 6 of this newsletter) to Barbara J. Smith, USDA ARS Small Fruit Research Station, PO Box 287, 306 S. High St., Poplarville, MS 39470‑2612 by October 31, 2000. Recipients will be contacted by the Vice President prior to the meeting. Awards will be presented at the SDAPS business meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2000.

CONGRATULATIONS TO
THE SD DeBARY BOWL
TEAM
The Southern Division deBary Bowl team placed second in the recent competition at the APS annual meeting in New Orleans. The team made it to the final round in the winners bracket but lost two games in the finals to the Pacific Division. Team members included graduate students, staff, and faculty from the University of Arkansas, Clemson University, University of Georgia, North Carolina State University, and Oklahoma State University. The students were really excited about the competition (so much so that they even studied before coming to the meeting). Congratulations to each of you who participated on the Southern Division team!
Let’s keep up the spirit of competition begun at last year’s Southern Division meeting and prepare for the deBary Bowl in Salt Lake City in 2001. The 2nd Annual Southern Division deBary Bowl will be held at the upcoming meeting in Ft. Worth. Show your school spirit by putting together a team to represent your university. If there are not enough meeting attendees from your university to make a team, we’ll merge universities. Teams of no more than five members from each school will compete for fun and prizes. James Blake, Clemson University, is the organizer. He is looking for assistants to moderate the competition. SDAPS members may also submit questions (with answers!). Contact him at jblake@clemson.edu.
The Executive Committee unanimously recommends the following changes to the By-Laws:
Graduate
Student Research Award. The Southern Division, APS, will recognize
outstanding research by graduate students by presenting a monetary gift. The certificate will indicate the name of
the winner, date, and place of presentation, and will bear the inscription,

Financial
Advisory Committee Report - The 2000 physical year mirrored 1999 with a slight
deficit in budget. Anticipating a
similar budget in 2001, APS council approved the following motions to reduce
outlay.
Short courses must
financially breakeven or better. The timeline for this goal is within 3 years
of FY2000-2001.
With over a $6000 deficit in
printed membership directories for 2000, council approved no printing of a
directory in 2001. 2002 and onward will
consist of an alphabetized listing only of current members, similar in format
to the attendees’ list at the annual meeting.
4.
The
2004 annual meeting site will be in Long Beach, CA, July 24-28.
5.
Councilor’s
Forum appointed a committee to propose the development of an APS identity
package to reflect the mission and objective of the society both internally and
externally.
6.
Industry
Advisory Committee – Chair will rotate from B. Carroll to C. Becker. The committee is seeking guidance, through
an industry survey, the beneficial role members can provide to the Society. Consolidation of IAC, Sustaining Associates
and the Industry Committee is also being considered.
7.
The
following biotechnology position statement, to be issued when needed, was
approved by Council,
“The American
Phytopathological Society supports responsible application of biotechnology for
the improvement of plant health and productivity.”
Council wishes to move from a
reactive to proactive strategy in developing position statements.
8.
APS
Foundation continues to thrive.
Twenty-one named travel funds were established as of July 1. Twenty-three student travel awards were
given at the New Orleans meeting.
9.
Office
of Electronic Communication launched APSnet III, Plant Health Progress and the
APSnet Education Center.
It has been a
very exciting year on council, with leadership passing from Neal Van Alfen to
Steve Slack. I appreciate the honor the Southern Division members has given me
to represent them on Council. You are now being asked to solicit among your
peers a nominee to seek this prestigious role within the Society. Ponder
wisely. The governance issue, now in committee, may altar the future role
divisions have on Council. Your new Councilor will have to address this issue
as well. Choose a representative that knows your Division, and will voice your
views.
