Brief descriptions of 2008 Annual Meeting The APS Pacific Division annual meeting will be held in beautiful Jackson Hole, Wyoming, June 24-27, 2008. This is a prime vacation time for Jackson Hole and we were fortunate to receive great hotel rates. The schedule is exciting and includes two symposia, student paper competition, research presentations, and a banquet. Topics for the symposia are: 1) A consortium approach to advancing the use of weather information in IPM, and 2) Using molecular techniques to solve practical problems in plant pathology. Presentation will start Wednesday morning on June 25 and end at noon on Friday, June 27. Meeting Site The annual meeting will be held at the Virginian Lodge, Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The Virginian Lodge (see more information at http://www.virginianlodge.com) is considered one of the more rustic lodges in Jackson with beautiful grounds and an easy walk of 7 blocks to downtown. Starting this year, abstracts for division meetings will be submitted online (see the instruction below). We encourage students to participate in the Student Paper Competition. If you are a student and would like to participate in the Competition, please check the box “This paper is for the student paper competition.” in the online submission form. Descriptions of Symposia Symposium I: A Consortium Approach to Advancing the use of Weather Information in IPM: The Western IPM Weather Workgroup. Organized by Carla Thomas, UC, Davis. New weather-driven modeling technologies, if developed wisely, can address the needs of decision makers regarding management and control of new, invasive, and established pests as well as irrigation and other horticultural practices. Leading scientists in this field have joined together to form the Western IPM Weather Workgroup funded by the Western IPM Center, USDA CSREES. Their mission is to develop a science-based system that provides principles and procedures to access, synthesize, distribute, and use weather and climate data and forecasts to improve crop management decisions. They have been working together to develop improved methods and models that advance the science, adoption, and effectiveness of IPM. In the symposium, speakers will present novel approaches and results from collaborative multi-state projects. Speakers will include agricultural meteorologists, climatologists, epidemiologists, and modelers. Speakers are members of the Western IPM Weather Workgroup, a diverse group of pathologists, climatologists, entomologists, crop modelers and weather forecasters.
