APS Pacific Division
Student paper Competition-Description
the Pacific Division, APS, will recognize outstanding research and oral
presentations by undergraduate and graduate students by presenting a plaque and
monetary gift. The plaque will indicate
the name of the winner and year, the inscription, “Pacific Division of the
American Phytopathological Society Student Paper
Competition” and the place. The monetary
gift will be $200.00 for first place, $150.00 for second, and 100.00 for third
place.
Students
competing for the award must (1) be enrolled as a regular student in an
accredited school in the Pacific Division at the time the paper is submitted;
(2) be a member in good standing of the Pacific Division at the time
the paper is submitted; (3) be sole or senior author of the paper; and (4) present the paper
orally at a meeting of the Pacific Division.
Students may enter only one paper; the paper must deal with research in
plant pathology that was conducted in the Pacific Division. Previous APS-Pacific Division Student Paper
award winners are eligible to compete provided the results presented do not
duplicate a previous entry. The
Secretary-Treasurer will send out details of procedures to be followed in
submitting a paper for consideration for the award and the criteria used to
evaluate the research, abstract and oral presentation along with the annual
call for abstracts of papers to be presented at the Division meeting.
The
chairperson of the judging committee for the award will be appointed by the
President. The chairperson in turn will
select four active division members to serve on the committee. No individual will judge a paper presented by
one of their own students. Selection of
the winner will be based on (1) quality of research; (2) originality of the
research; and (3) presentation of results.
The committee may present more than one award or decline to give an
award if, in its judgment, none of the papers presented are worthy. The program will be arranged so that all
papers competing for the award will be presented first in the program. The awards will be presented by the
chairperson of the judging committee or a representative of the President
during the annual Division Business meeting.
*Student dues are $1 per
year and are paid directly to the APS office.
