National Organizing
and Scientific Committees have been created for each one of those events.
Nevertheless, coordination have been done among the committees for the
presentation and discussion of common topics to the different meetings with a
view to guarantee the participation of the delegates and to enrich the scientific
debate.
GENERAL
information
Cuba, the biggest
island in the Antilles, is a summary of the nature of the Caribbean for its
variety of scenarios, diversity of cities and profusion of wonderful beaches.
It has a total surface of 100 922 km2 and an approximate population
of 11,2 million inhabitants. Their climate is subtropical, with average maxim
and minimum temperatures of 35ºC and 19ºC, respectively, and an annual media of
25ºC (77ºF). There are two stations in Cuba: one dry from November to April and
another rainy from May to October. It possesses more than 8000 vegetable
species, more than the half being endemic.
The capital of the
country, the city of Havana, was founded in 1519 being named Villa of San
Cristóbal of Havana. Their historical center, Old Havana, constitutes a
wonderful complex of colonial architecture that has been declared by the UNESCO
a “Cultural Patrimony of the Humanity.”
Cuba possesses more
than 400 beaches that conform a great part of its costs. Among them, Varadero
beach is an important tourist pole of the country located in the north coast of
the Island, in the Peninsula of Hicacos. It possesses an impressive beach line,
of about 20 kilometers long, of white sands and a transparent blue sea of warm
waters. The county of Matanzas, where it is located Varadero, is a rich region
in cultural and historical traditions, with natural treasures as the Caves of
Bellamar, the Valley of Yumurí or the Coral Reef at the North, There are also
in Matanzas, the largest citrus growing areas in the country and the first of
the Sugarcane Experimental Stations of Cuba, “Julio Mesa” at Jovellanos, of
well known prestige.
The Center of
Conventions Plaza América located in Varadero, is a modern complex of high
integration of facilities and services. It has a total capacity in its rooms
for 1900 people and a prepared and specialized personnel, able to satisfy the
expectations of the organizers and participants of the events carried out in
it.
CALLING FOR PAPERS SUBMISSIONS
Scientists,
specialists and students linked to the Plant Health and Plant Protection,
including the members of ONTA and APS-CD, are invited to submit the summaries
of the papers to be presented as posters or oral presentations. This is
extended to all those that have been previously contacted as invited speakers
in the symposia or workshops. A copy of the summaries should be received before
March 30, 2001. (Check the
instructions for the summaries and posters). It should be sent the inscription
and summary forms (Check inscription and summary models) by electronic mail
(e-mail) to varadero@hotmail.com with
copy to the President of Local Organizing Committee of the specific meeting
that you want to participate. It is
necessary to clarify the type of
presentation (poster or oral) and the audiovisual means that will be used.
The impression of the
Program and the Abstract Book will not be carried out until one week before the
celebration of the event to facilitate the inclusion of last moment changes.
For this reason, the mentioned documents will not be mailed to the
participants, although they had been pre-registered. Nevertheless, starting from the month of May of the 2001, a
program will be included in our web site that will be available starting from
the month of October of the present year.
The general
information on the scientific seminar can be found at the web site of the Desk
of Conventions of Cuba: (http://www.buroconv.cubaweb.cu),
as well as at the Portal of the Cuban Science (http://www.cubaweb.com)
and INISAV site (http://www.ceniai.inf.cu/ciencia/inisav).
It is important to visit these web sites periodically starting
from October 2000, to obtain the last news about the event.
In the organization of
all meetings we have prepare a scientific program including the most actualized
topics at the present time. These, together to the programmed social
activities, make us think that it will be a fruitful and educational week for
all. The hospitality of the Cubans and the charm of Varadero constitute a
complement for the sure success of these scientific events. We are convinced
that this will be an unforgettable experience for all the participants. We will meet in June of the 2001!

INSTRUCTIONS
FOR THE Elaboration OF THE Summaries
The
Summaries should be received before March 30 2001
Summaries should be
sent for all the types of presentations (oral, posters and invited exhibitors).
The summaries will be able to write in Spanish or English and they should
contain original results. The title should be short and specific.
The heading of the summaries should include the title, the names of the
authors, its affiliation, address and postal code, everything in bold. The title should be written in
uppercase LETTERS. The name of the exhibitor should be underlined. The text of
the summary should be located immediately after the heading, without lines
neither additional spaces. The text should contain up to 250 words and to be
located in a single paragraph. All the scientific names should be written in italic characters. The International
System of Units should be used. The summaries should be written in
IBM-compatible and recoverable systems in MS Word 95 or 97. It is recommended
as source Times New Roman point 12. Please do not limit the text of the summary
with any line (See the example summary that is shown in this page).
The summaries that are presented will be published in
a special number of the Magazine “Protección Vegetal. ” Additionally, the
Magazine invites the authors to publish the complete articles of its
presentations, be in Spanish or in English.
GENETIC DIVERSITY OF PHYTOPLASMAS
ASSOCIATED TO SUGARCANE YELLOW LEAF SYNDROME (YLS) IN CUBA. Y. Arocha,
E.L. Peralta and P. Jones. Plant
Pathology Department, National Center of Plant and Animal Health (CENSA), Apdo
10, San José de las Lajas, Havana, Cuba, and IACR, Rothamsted, Harpenden, U.K. The aim of this work had been to determine the
genetic variability of phytoplasmas associated to YLS in Cuba. Restriction
profiles of 277 sugarcane samples, previously determined as
phytoplasma-positives, were compared using RsaI
and AluI enzymes. Additionally, PCR
amplification of 16-23S intergenic spacer region of four positive samples was
done, and each PCR product was sequenced using ABI 310 Automatic Sequencer.
Sequences were compared with those reported in Genbank database for 43 other
phytoplasmas. Phylogenetic analysis was conducted making use of MEGA (Version
1.01) and CLUSTAL W Programs. Five different restriction patterns were observed
when sugarcane samples were analyzed. Nevertheless, 95% of them were similar to
Aster Yellow (AY) reference pattern. Comparison of 16-23S intergenic spacer
region sequences showed at least three different phytoplasmas. The first one
that belongs to Aster Yellow-IA subgroup, which is 98.89% homologous to parsley
yellow phytoplasma. The second one, similar to ScYLP-I from Africa (99%
homology), pertaining to Western X group, and the third one, which appear to be
a new subgroup of Aster Yellow group, with 94.5% of homology when compared with
members of AY group.
The summaries must be received by e-mail by 30 March
2001 to be accepted:
§
To send as an enclosed document (“attached”) in
MS Word 97.

Instead of the Schedule of Shipment of
Summaries, indicate in their message the presentation type and the audiovisual
