Historic City Tour
Saturday, August 25, 1:30 - 5 pm
Celebrate Salt Lake City! Begin at
the Capitol, where the view from the front steps is magnificent.
Murals line the Georgian marble rotunda walls and tell the story of
the settling of the Old West. Visit the Beehive House, Brigham Young’s
beautifully restored home, where many artifacts are on display. A stop
will be made at Mormon Handicraft, a store that features handmade
items at reasonable prices, followed by a drive past the elegant
mansions on South Temple. The tour includes the University of Utah’s
Rice Stadium, future site of ceremonies for the 2002 Winter Olympic
Games, Old Fort Douglas, Pioneer Trail State Park and the
This-Is-The-Place Monument at the mouth of Emigration Canyon. Guests
will view Trolley Square on the return, a unique shopping center built
in trolley barns from the 1800s. (Tour includes transportation,
guide.) Cost: $22.50 per person.
Broadcast, Brunch
and Snowbird
Sunday, August 26, 8:30 am - 3:30 pm
We’ll begin on Historic Temple
Square for the radio broadcast of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Then it’s
off to LaCaille Restaurant for a continental breakfast and a stroll on
the grounds. LaCaille is a replica of an 18th century French Chateau,
nestled in a 22-acre stream-laced setting. The next stop is the
Snowbird Ski and Summer resort, located at the top of Little
Cottonwood Canyon, Utah’s steepest and most rugged canyon. Visitors
often comment that this area reminds them of the Swiss Alps. Snowbird
offers easy nature trails for walking and exploring. The tram takes
guests to the top of Hidden Peak at 11,000 feet above sea level for a
view that is so expansive, Wyoming and Nevada can be seen. Don’t
forget a camera and a jacket! (Tour includes transportation, guide,
breakfast at LaCaille, tram ticket at Snowbird.) Cost: $69 per person.
Great Salt Lake,
Kennecott Copper Mine and Gardner Village
Monday, August 27, 9 am - 3 pm
The Great Salt Lake is the largest
saltwater body in the world, where swimmers float like corks. Guests
will learn about the lake’s turbulent Ice Age history, its romantic
past as the “Coney Island of the West,” and its present-day
significance regarding weather, industry, recreation, and migratory
bird habitat.
Then it’s on to the Copper Mine, so
enormous that shuttle astronauts can identify it from space. If the
Sears Tower were set in the bottom of the open pit, it would reach
only halfway to the top. Nine million people could be seated if it was
a football stadium. In addition to copper, trace amounts of gold and
silver are found here.
Final stop will be Gardner Mill and
Village. This once-working gristmill and the restored pioneer homes
now house delightful specialty shops. Archibald’s restaurant offers
a delicious variety of lunches and specialty desserts. (Tour includes
transportation, guide, admission to the mine, set lunch menu at
Archibald’s Restaurant.) Cost: $45 per person.
Know Your Roots
(Registration deadline: July 30)
Monday, August 27, 1 - 4 pm
A pedigree chart will be mailed and
should be returned by each registrant three weeks before the meeting.
Packet contains pedigree chart, recommendations where to begin
research on two of the individuals on the chart, and time with a
certified genealogist. Minimum required: 10 people. Cost: $50 per
person.
Gold Medal Event
Tuesday, August 28, 8:30 am - 1:30 pm
This tour focuses on the Olympic
Winter Games of 2002. We’ll begin with a drive by the Salt Palace,
where 12,000 media reporters and personnel will beam the games
worldwide. From there, we will go to the Delta Center, site of hockey
and figure skating, and then to the Olympic Torch at Gallivan Plaza.
The University of Utah will afford you a view of the stadium, site of
the Olympic ceremonies. On the ride to Park City you’ll get to view
the new Olympic video via bus monitors as you travel to see the skiing
venues. The Olympic Sports Park will fascinate you with the bobsled,
luge ski jump and Nordic runs.
A stroll down Park City’s Main
Street will allow you time to have lunch on your own and browse in the
unusual shops and art galleries. Before returning, the group will
visit the Deer Valley and Park City ski runs where the slalom and
giant slalom will be held. (Tour includes transportation, guide,
admission to Utah Winter Sports Park.) Cost: $32 per person.
Shaking the Family
Tree
Tuesday, August 28, 2 - 5 pm
Excellent for the beginning
genealogist, this is a guided tour of the genealogy library where you’ll
learn the Soundex system. The only information you need to bring with
you is the name of the head of the household in the U.S. in 1920 and
the city where they lived. This class is limited to 10 individuals.
Cost: $50 per person.
History of Women of
the West Through Quilting
Wednesday, August 29, 10 am - 12 pm
Women of the early West expressed
their personality, lifestyle and their creative talents through
quilting, which took on many forms, both decorative and functional.
During the tour, guests will visit a lovely private home and view a
large collection of quilts and lace. Each quilt has a story and the
hostess will share information on the patterns and fabrics unique to
the West. This remarkable quilt collection is not generally seen by
the public and is a MeetingsAmerica exclusive. (Tour includes
transportation, guide.) Limited to 26 people. Cost: $33 per person.
The Sundance
Experience
Friday, August 24 or Wednesday, August
29, 9 am to 5 pm
The Sundance Farm is located at the
base of Timpanagos Mountain and on the edge of Deer Creek Reservoir.
The commitment at Sundance Farms is to a pure, healthy and natural
lifestyle. The earth-to-table philosophy is a simple approach of
harvesting from the garden and making it part of everyday life. Our
Sundance experience begins at the Sundance Catalog Outlet Store in
Sugarhouse Commons. Guests can purchase over-stocks and discounted
merchandise such as jewelry, clothing, art, and herb and kitchen
products that celebrate the earth, all from the famous catalog. We
will then travel through the beautiful Wasatch Mountains to the Park
City/Deer Valley area, then on to the Heber Valley with its beautiful
farms and ranches.
You’ll have time to take a Sundance
class, which involves the philosophy of gathering materials from the
gardens and creating bath oils, herbal cooking blends, edible flower
garnish, culinary herb wreaths, and dried flower arrangements. Items
made in class can be mailed home at no additional cost. A tour of the
gardens, drying barns, and soap making process will complete your farm
experience. Lunch will be plucked from the garden and prepared on the
beautiful patio. You will feel rejuvenated just spending time at the
farm, where Robert Redford boards his horses and visits frequently.
Next we travel down Provo Canyon to
the Sundance Resort, established by Redford over 30 years ago. He
calls Sundance his "sacred place." The thriving art and
recreational community is shared with golden eagles, red-tailed hawks,
elk, deer and even an occasional moose. There will be time to see the
art and general store and enjoy the beautiful scenery. (Tour includes
transportation, guide, shopping, tour, lunch and class at Sundance
Farm, tour of Sundance Resort.) Cost: $127 per person.
One-on-One
Consultation, by appointment only
For those who have done advanced work
in genealogy, an individual consultation can be arranged with a
professional genealogist. You can bring your own research, and
questions on difficult lines will be discussed. Advice and
recommendations will be given on your own personal line. Cost: $50 per
hour.
