March 2008 Spotlight Articles Selected by the Editors of Plant Disease, Phytopathology, and Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions (MPMI)
Too often the decision of how many field samples to collect is made arbitrarily. J. R. Steadman and colleagues used results from sampling bean rust in several countries to calculate the optimal number of field and within-field samples for future surveys. Phytopathology Editor’s Pick Most genes conferring resistance to bacterial blight of rice caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae are dominant, but xa5 is recessive and encodes a transcription factor subunit. Lyer-Pascuzzi et al. further show xa5 resistance is recessive and present evidence that resistance involves interference with bacterial movement rather than multiplication. A role for induced basal defense in the xa5-mediated resistance is proposed. MPMI Editor’s Pick In the March issue of MPMI, Goel et al. report that the bacterial Type III effector HopAM1 of Pseudomonas syringae contributes to virulence on water-stressed plants. Transgenic plants expressing HopAM1 have enhanced ABA responses, which are known to overlap with defense responses. An online subscription is needed to access the full articles.
