September 2007 Spotlight Articles Selected by the Editors of Plant Disease, Phytopathology, and Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions (MPMI) Plant Disease Editor’s Pick Tasmania produces 25 percent of the world’s supply of pyrethrum, but yields are reduced by ray blight. In the September Plant Disease Editor’s Pick article, Sarah Pethybridge, Paul Esker, and colleagues verified that fungicide applications significantly reduced ray blight and increased yields. Then, using a novel regression model, they determined fungicide-application thresholds for the industry. Phytopathology Editor’s Pick The phylogeny, nomenclature and biology of bacteria causing soft rot disease, is complex and has undergone a number of recent changes. In this article, a multilocus phylogenetic analysis of a diversity of soft rot bacteria provides new insight into evolution and biology of these bacteria and, hopefully, a framework and methodology to facilitate the analysis of newly characterized strains. MPMI Editor’s Pick In the September issue of MPMI, van Esse et al. demonstrate that Avr4 of Cladosporium fulvum is a bonafide virulence factor. Earlier it had been shown that Avr4 binds chitin and protects it against hydrolysis by plant chitinases. An online subscription is needed to access the full articles.
