On April 26, 1996, the ASM Public and Scientific Affairs Board sponsored a
congressional briefing on new and emerging infectious diseases in plants,
animals and humans. The House Agriculture Committee, chaired by
Representative Pat Roberts (R-KS), hosted the briefing. Published in this
booklet are the scientific proceedings from the briefing. The APS was
involved in the development of this booklet, Anne Vidaver, professor and
head of the Department of Plant Pathology, University of Nebraska was
instrumental in this process.
Jim Cook (rjcook@wsu.edu) of Washington State University, is a National Academy of Sciences member with expertise in the area of agricultural threats. Larry Madden (madden.1@osu.edu), Ohio State University, is particularly knowledgeable regarding emerging diseases and bioterrorism. Molly Cline (molly.n.cline@monsanto.com) is director of government and industry affairs for animal agriculture and Monsanto protein technologies with the Monsanto Corporation. Julie Beale (jbeale@ca.uky.edu) of the University of Kentucky, Lexington, is a plant disease diagnostician who has provided congressional testimony related to bioterrorism. Andre Levesque (levesqueca@em.agr.ca), Agricultural Canada, Ottawa, is skilled in the areas of plant pathogens and disease detection. Anne Desjardins (desjarae@mail.ncaur.usda.gov) , USDA Peoria, is a mycotoxin expert. Bill Brown (wbrown@lamar.colostate.edu), Colorado State University, has previous experience with bioterrorism issues. Norm Schaad (schaad@ncifcrf.gov) from USDA ARS Fort Detrick, Maryland, has previous experience with bioterrorism issues. Jacque Fletcher (jaf2394@okstate.edu), Oklahoma State University, is president-elect of APS and a liaison to APS Council. Jan Leach (jeleach@ksu.edu), Kansas State University, has previous experience with bioterrorism issues and serves as liaison to the APS Public Policy Board.
