Using the APS Plant Disease Video Image Resource

The APS Videodisc contains nearly 10,000 images related to plant pathology. It can be viewed with a monitor and an NTSC videodisc player. A DOS-program database comes bundled with the laser disc for easy and rapid searches for image descriptions and numbers. Each image is described by pathogen, disease, host (English and Latin) and an image description.

Each image is viewed using its 5-digit number. Images are accessed using a hand-held remote control device with a key pad. Bar codes for the images numbers can also be prepared and used with a laser pen to access images more quickly.

At this time, it appears that only Pioneer manufactures videodisc players and bar code software. Educational packages at relatively modest prices are described at their website: http://www.pioneerusa.com/.

The CLD-V2800 laser disc player with remote control that has a numbered key pad to access images by 6-digit image number sells for $695. The UC-V109BC bar code reader is $160

To replace the image numbers in the lessons with bar codes, bar code software is needed. It is available in both Mac and PC versions for about $95. See documentation for two such programs (BarKoder for Windows; and Bar'N'Coder) included here as .pdf files, but contact Pioneer for current information. Photocopies of lessons with bar codes will function if the copier makes clean copies.

The Ztek corporation is now selling Pioneer Videodisc players, lasercode readers and bar-code software. Click here to go to their site.
