Chapter Eight
Hungry Planet: Stories of Plant Diseases

Questions for Discussion

1.  For what kinds of plant diseases are fungicides mostly used? What are the advantages and disadvantages of using contact versus systemic fungicides?

2.  How do farmers minimize the need to use fungicides? Consider general disease management options and specific ways to reduce application for a specific disease.

3.  What pesticide regulations are in place to minimize pesticide residues on agricultural products?

4.  Some years ago, people in a survey were asked this question:

Should this chemical be banned from our food supply?

Prolonged exposure to the substance dihydrogen monoxide in its solid form causes severe tissue damage, exposure to its gaseous form causes severe burns, and in liquid form it has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.

How do you think many people would answer initially? How would they answer after being told that dihydrogen monoxide is water? As an educated consumer, what kinds of questions should you ask to determine if something in your diet is likely to cause health problems?
